Background

In the relatively short time period since pit closures job losses have had a devastating effect on the prosperity of both individuals and communities and there are a number of infrastructure support initiatives which aim to regenerate these former coalfield areas.

In relation to business development it has been widely recorded that efforts in this field have faced a number of problems including a general absence of entrepreneurial activity and role models.

These communities do however have several strengths including a healthy community spirit, and a long tradition of self-help and mutual organisation, typified by the widespread establishment of local Miners Welfare organisations, convalescent facilities and the establishment of a Scottish Mining Museum.

Member organisations have played a pivotal role in providing targeted local services in response to community need. However, in common with the entire voluntary sector, they are facing many challenges both in seeking to work more efficiently and in securing long term funding to continue their activities for the benefit of their local communities.

Coalfield Social Enterprise Network

has been established to allow members to work together to develop social enterprise initiatives.

Members are committed to exploring all avenues to ensure their long term sustainability. Their plans to develop an additional income stream through social enterprise activity will allow them to continue to provide those services which meet the changing needs of their local communities as they continue to strive towards successful regeneration.
